I assume you mean the “Gartley” pattern.

H. M. Gartley who wrote a book in 1935 called “Profits in
the Stock Market” where he highlighted two patterns:
“Gartley” and “Butterfly”. This is kind of like the Ken
Roberts 1-2-3 which is in my experience the worst indicator
in the history of trading.

The idea behind the “Gartley” and “Butterfly” is to watch
if either forms near important support or resistance levels.

Bullish Gartley

Bearish Gartley

The first pattern (Green) is a Bullish Gartley where the market is
supposed to reverse at point D and move higher. The next is
a Bearish Gartley (Red) where the idea is to short at point D
hoping for further decline.

The idea is that leg X to A is an impulse move and the
retracement leg A to D is a distinct two wave move where leg
A to B equals leg C to D (in points).

Next is the Bullish Butterfly

And the Bearish Butterfly

The idea is to short at point D expecting further decline in
market price. The difference between this pattern and the
Gartley is that the A to D leg is GREATER (in points) than
the X to A leg.

The reason I don’t use these patterns is due to their
subjectivity in visual recognition making them unpredictable
at best for the serious forex trader. I have found the most
reliable indicator to be the TNT Bears and Bulls indicator
because (1) it gives an objective (clear) signal that (2) I
can Monte Carlo test and quantify and (3) I have been able
to find markets where it gives me a high expected return
with a narrow confidence interval. For more see...

I may or may not make the call tonight, but I had a couple
of questions to see if you might cover:

1. Gold (the mini contract- GYGG0 Feb 2010) has begun its
downward correction apparently, but my daily charts with
Gecko have not provided a Bulls and Bears sell signal yet.
Should we wait for a minor correction to the upside before
looking for an entry point to go short the market? What is
your take and how would you play this move?

2. Similar question to #1 above but with the US Dollar
Index (DX-MH0), Mini Natural Gas (QGF0). Both of these
commodities have made a nice run in recent weeks, should we
wait for a minor correction to the downside before looking
for an entry point to go long the market? What is your take
and how would you play this move? Based on what I remember
from Stanley Kroll's book, we should be waiting for
confirmation of a change in the major trend. Both of these
commodities look to possibly be making this shift in the
long term trend. How are you watching and trading these
charts?

3. What strategy do you employ when trading long term
(trend change) and short term (scalp trading using Auto
Pilot) with the EUR/USD mini pair? Do you trade a certain
quantity and let it run long term and a certain quantity to
buy and sell on the short term flux using Auto Pilot? I
would be interested to see how you would approach it
currently.

4. In Vegas you mentioned you and Carlos were running
diagnostics on the Auto Pilot with the EUR/USD. How is your
study progressing so far? Is there is take aways you can
share at this point?

Gold just gave a strong short signal in the BnB indicator
and you missed it. Look for a correction to try to get in
but remember that shorting is harder because markets like
Gold are a lot more volatile downward.

You missed the long signal in both the Dollar Index

and Mini NG. Good fisherman stay by their poles!

When I position trade I give a lot room for the market so I
don’t trade…I might only trade 1 mini contract per $500 in
the account.

You have to be very careful to not put on such
large positions that you get knocked out. Plus, when I
enter I spend a lot of time looking at where I would be
wrong and want to get out. That influences heavily how many
mini contracts I put on.

My Profitable Week Trading Forex On Autopilot!

On Monday Lan was bragging about an Autopilot setting that made $11,977.44 on $50,000 margin in THREE weeks. That’s $143,729.28 per year!

Major Trend Is Now Up... March Stock Bottom Confrimed!

Hi Doc,

The description (Forex 1) of the worldwide "FX Multi-tier Setup" with SWIFT, Reuters, EBS, Central Banks, International Banks (100-200) etc. was great. Is there anyone who has tried to draw this "FX Multi-tier Setup" and how the market is kept in line ? Such a drawing could explain a lot more and give even better insight to how the setup is working.

Is it possible to look at the Fx market as a huge Dynamic systems with a lot of subsystems that works together trough positive and negative feedback?

The answer is “yes” and “no.” “Yes,” you could try to create a function linking all the systems. But, “no” because you’d almost certainly be wasting your time. Stanley Kroll made money trading foreign exchange by simply paying attention to when the USD was at extreme highs or lows on a weekly and monthly chart.

He knew that currencies fluctuate between bearish or bullish major trends in cycles of about 3 to 7 years.

When the weekly and monthly chart showed that the USD was at an extreme Kroll would wait for technical indicators to show a break in the major trend followed by follow through price activity that indicated confirmation. He would then load up on a current trend reaction against the new major trend.

The key thing is that a wise trade always trades with the major trend. You can only see the major trend on a weekly or monthly chart.

I understand that the Arbitrage Vultures keep the market in line so the difference in spread do not differ to much from one broker to another. Are these Arbitrage vultures also responsible for making in-balance so they can take out huge amount of money in short time?

Sometimes sudden +100-200-300 pips spikes are seen on our charts i.e. spikes that are 10-20 times higher than normal bars? How can you explain these? How frequently are they. Do they carry any signal to a daytrader or swingtrader? Anything to concerned about? Do a stop-loss at the broker even work in such a situation i.e. at FXCM.

There are enourmous entities at work in Forex markets as you have learned in my course, Doc Brown’s Futures, Forex, and Options Autopilot! And, they have lots of money — much of it legally stolen from tax payers due to the bank bailouts. The spikes you are referring to can knock you out of a good position when you wer actually correct.

You have one of two solutions:

First, you trade with enough margin on a contract to ensure that you can have wide enough stops to withstand the spike.

Second, you can study when the spikes tend to occur over the year. During those times you can trade Fx futures call options when the major trend is bullish or put options when the major trend is bearish.

In the introduction you say "Spotting these manipulations should be your major job" ! Okay, but then you tell that the central banks try to intervene the FX system by buying or selling their own currency and in next sentence you say "...just as a drop of fresh water doen'nt affec the salinity of the ocean!" Wow, so who is capable of doing any manipulations at all if not the central banks? And what timeframe are you actually talking about when it come to manipulations?

When you explained all about the cross-rate madness, rounding problems, triangular arbitrage system and bla bla it stroke me that all this cross-rate calculation, rounding and etc. can in itself explain the chaotic behaviour especially at lower time frames like 1 and 5 minutes or maybe even on the 15 minutes timeframe. It might even explain a sudden start of a momenton and a breakout that are not necessary caused by real supply and demand i.e. a dynamic system within chaos built in. Do you agree?

Yes and could also explain the spikes you mentioned before.

The SSI - Speculative Sensitivity Index found on Daily Fx site something that can be used in trading on the 4 hour timeframe?

Same principles in short term trading apply to long term trading but decisions have to be made much quicker. Discipline is key!

The whole intention behind futures and currencies is to try to “get big or go home.” Keep you’re eye on the all important goal of taking a little money and making it really big fast!

That’s why I teach you in chapter 9 of the futures course to calculate how much you can risk each year without hurting your family. Make sure you do that so that you can day trade calmly without fear.

Also, I have never known a person to consistently make money with the Commitment of Traders Report by itself — and I know the guy who created it…

The forex SSI is related to the COT.

If your trading a 4 minute chart you are so close to the floor’s price action which randomly whips around due to arbitrage that you might as well flip a coin when it comes to your long or short positions.

I recommend that people position trade Forex using the information that also exists in the futures markets.

If you are going to try to day trade do a lot of work system building and testing with the TNT autopilot plug in.

Day trading is very hard work just like counting cards in BlackJack in a Las Vegas casino. Make sure you know what you’re up against when you do it.

TnT Autopilot suggestion:

In a whipsaw situation I see some of my autopilots are just entering and exiting very fast! What do I do about that if not just going a higher timeframe? Wouldn't it be an idea to be able to control the autopilot to stop autotrading until it gets out of the whipsaw i.e. "Start trading when higher that xxx.xxxxx" and "lower than yyy.yyyyy" similar to "Use time Restrainst" ?

Same principles in short term trading apply to long term trading but decisions have to be made much quicker. Discipline is key! You’re hitting sideways markets and need to find a way to step to the sidelines through your own analysis of the markets your trading.

How do you use the Autopilot? Any hints or tips to share?

Use a combination of technical indicators that work well together and then play with the values.

For instance you could combine the TNT Bulls and the Bears with the ribbon indicator as a base and then work form there. By building your own system you’ll know its quirks and that is critical.

Doc Brown Answer: "PBS is touting a balanced budget argument that is incorrect from a Keynesian perspective...which is the correct perspective. But since the Milton Freidman "Church of Free Markets" approach has turned out just plain wrong; combined with a paucity of convictions of bankers post-bailout; you can expect politicians to do all the wrong things again. The big danger with all this is that taxes may skyrocket. So, if you're starting out you (1) methodically save into a Roth IRA for tax elimination. But those amount are small ($5,000 this year). Then (2) you trade futures or Forex to turn small amounts of money into a big pile using a corporation you create to trade as a business. Then you can tax shelter up to $60,000 per year using a SEP or SIMPLE IRA in the stock market through a passive core strategy such as indexed funds (The Gone Fishin Portfolio) or Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKB)."

Doc Brown Answer; "The NFA is a group of predatory attorneys that exist to suck garbage fees out of your account. They cause huge problems in futures where they basically muzzle otherwise good educators who have made the mistake of registering with the NFA. Right now the NFA is posturing to force regulation on Forex cash trading. The recent regulations have negligible affects on your trading. BUT, even if the NFA eventually makes sizable inroads in Forex (as they have parasitized futures) you will still be able to simply move your account to the United Kingdom through a large clearing firm like FxCM."

Doc Brown; "NO!!! TIPS have had a very high yield due to inflation initiated by the run-up in oil prices such that they are now a bad investment (you'd be buying high). Now the game is in straight stocks, indexes, or trading the SP or e-minis to the upside!"

Ps. TIPS are t-bills and t-bonds that are adjusted for inflation. I.e. Treasury Inflation Protected Securities.

Bobby C. Asks; "The DBFFOA course is the best I've ever found on Forex...thanks so much for writing it. How does money management work?"

Doc Brown; "It's a lot like casino Black Jack. You don't want to bet too much and get wiped out on one hand. You don't want to bet too little and bleed to death winning chump change. A good beginning rule of thumb is to (1) give yourself 20 tries to hit it big and (2) never risk more than 45 to 50% of your trading capital on any trade. So, if a contract requires $2,000 in initial margin, as an example, you'd never risk more than $1,000 on any trade and would need $20,000 in starting capital to begin trading in this hypothetical commodity."

Mike Havilund asks: "What about trading indexes other than the e-mini or SP?"

Doc Brown's Answer: "There are a number of interesting equity indexes around the world with a related futures contract. In particular the Hang Seng in Hong Kong. It has a point value of 4 GBP and can be easily traded if you are in England. The nice thing about emerging indexes is that they are all linked to the S&P. But they tend to rise more and fall less. Look inside TNT at the alternative indexes available."

Jason B. Asks "Hey Doc is it a good idea to analyze the market with every technical indicator?"

Answer: Absolutely not...be selective... with just 3 or 4 indicators you can nail your entries and calculate your money management through profit targets.

For instance a good beginning group of indicators would be MACD, Fibonacci ruler, and Elliot waves all in the TNT platform.

Come up with what makes sense to you and stick to that group till you master it learning to guage fundamentals as we teach you in my DBFFOA course at...
